Nick Wey Closing In On Fifth Overall in the 250cc SX Series

Recapped By: Pat Schutte - OMS Sports

SALT LAKE CITY, (April 26, 2004) - Team Suzuki's Nick Wey pulled within three points of fifth place overall in the 250 class with a masterful performance in the main event at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday. Wey's sixth place finish cut Michael Byrne's lead to 191-188, forcing what should prove to be a great battle this weekend in Las Vegas.

"I'm definitely looking forward to Vegas this weekend," said Wey, who was a special guest on Speed Freaks radio last night. "There's a good vibe with Suzuki heading into this weekend. Sean (Hamblin) had a good race at Salt Lake and everybody at Suzuki is looking forward to a good week of testing and rolling into Vegas for some great racing.

"Hopefully I can make up more than enough points to bring a top five overall finish to Suzuki."

Wey, Suzuki's top rider, has been the model of consistency through out the season. In his past three races he has placed no lower than seventh, while Byrne has finished outside the top ten in three of his last four races. Still, Wey knows that it'll be difficult to make up points on the Australian rider, though he still figures he's got a pretty good shot at it.

"Byrner's always fast," said Wey. "But lately he's not been as consistent as he was earlier this year. I'm figuring he's not going to want to give up fifth overall without a battle, so the fans at Vegas are going to be for a treat because I'm wanting fifth place real bad."
