Nick Wey Rides Strong at Millville

Recapped By: Pat Schutte - OMS Sports

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Millville, Minn., the site of Team Suzuki's Nick Wey's only Outdoor National win (1999), was again good to Wey as he race to a seventh place overall finish with two top ten moto efforts (9-9).

Wey opened the first moto on fire, getting out in fourth place - in sea of four strokes - and holding onto his position for half the race.

"I was happy with my results, given how tough the track was this weekend," said Wey. "My RM 250 was set up perfectly and handled those wild Millville whoops better than any bike I've ever ridden."

Wey and rival Ernesto Fonseca are in a tight battle for sixth place overall in the 250cc standings. Fonseca leads Wey by one point, 211-210. And, with three races remaining, Wey is out of fifth place overall by 27 points.

"It'd be nice to catch Byrner (Michael Byrne, 5th in the Nationals) like I did in supercross, but it's not too likely," said Wey, who topped Byrne 204 to 201 for fifth place overall in the THQ/AMA Supercross Series - doing so by beating Byrne in the last race at Vegas. "Me and Ernie (Fonseca) will go right down to the wire. It'll be a classic Suzuki vs. Honda battle."

This weekend Wey and Team Suzuki travel to Binghamton, N.Y., to race Round Ten of the AMA Chevrolet U.S. Motocross Championship. Last year Wey finished ninth overall at Binghamton.
