Nick Wraps Up SX Season

Recapped By: Doug Hein

Well the sx season was a bit up and down for me this year.  I feel I rode pretty well on the 250 at the beginning of the season.  I qualified out of the heat race a few times which is a good feat, with my best finish being a 7th in Anaheim.  When it was time to start the east coast series I was 8th in the points!

The 125 series started out not so good with a fluke crash in a press ride, which left me with a sore ankle for much of the series.  I found myself on the podium in Atlanta, and Minneapolis, which put me back in the points hunt coming into the St. Louis.

There was a week off after Minneapolis, before St Louis, and a cold turned into walking pneumonia.  Even though I was feeling terrible I was determined to get to the front in a last chance to close the gap in points before the last race in Pontiac.  A first turn crash and another crash in desperation put me 14th and disappointed.  Going into the last race at Pontiac I was out of the point’s championship.  A week off and a hometown race is what I needed to lift my spirits.  I ended up winning the heat and with a hard fought 3rd I was pretty happy with the season as a whole.  For the 3rd season in a row I finished with over 100 pts, so I will be riding the 250 class in the 2002 sx season and unsure of what class for the outdoors.

Speaking of the outdoors, this season will be my best ever.  I am riding better than ever.  Dean Baker of Yamaha of Troy and I have been doing a lot of testing on the motor and my bike is awesome.  Yamaha has also given me works suspension for the outdoors, which is working great.  The bike, the team, my family and I are really excited for the first outdoor race this weekend.
